The youth club was founded in 1961 at a building in Portishead High St which was previously used as the library.

The youth club soon grew out of this building and a new purpose built centre was opened in Harbour Road.

The Portishead Youth Centre was officially opened on Saturday May 21st 1966 at a total cost of £18,000 and within a year the centre was expanded further in 1967 to include an all weather play area and an arts room.

The Youth Centre is leased by North Somerset Council to a voluntary committee who manage the centre on behalf of the town of Portishead.

Our main aim is the social education of young people between the ages of 11 to 25 years (primarily those between 13-19) during their leisure time, so that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and as members of society to play a useful part in the affairs of the community.

The Youth Centre aims to offer young people the opportunity to participate in a challenging, educational and stimulating programme that encourages personal development and self confidence.

The Youth Centre offers a wide range of activities which are relevant to the needs of young people today. These include social and sporting activities, inter-club visits, trips and outings, educational workshops and arts & crafts. The club also houses a full recording studio.

The Youth Centre is affiliated with Youth Clubs UK and Young Bristol. The centre is staffed by a team of fully trained professionals whose job is to supervise, tutor and assist young persons in their care.
